Yeah point was mainly to say "Why say it at all?" It definitely isn't a compliment to your own players. Publicly stating players from other teams are superior to those on your own team (even followed by praise and/or "hopes they can become" jibberish) can only be considered an insult, regardless of what caveats you place at the end to soften the blow. Everyone knows Eli>Romo and SFran LB's>Dallas LB's but calling attention to the fact via an interview is just plain dumb for a owner/GM. If he isn't smart enough to know that his players will be bombarded with questions about these statements for the entire off season he is dumber than I thought.
That sort of statement, "I hope one day we can be as good as those guys" might work with a very young team if the owner/GM was saying it about the team as a collective. But the Cowboys are pretty middle-of-the-pack agewise. Telling a bunch of 5 or 6 year veterans that you hope they can become as good as a bunch of 8 or 9 year veterans is a slap in the face.
And, as has been alluded to, in most organizations the wrath for a deficiency in talent would fall on the GM. Jerruh, meet the mirror. Mirror, Jerruh.
